Looking Ahead
Make provisions for the larger companies to add their inventory list to Nourish with the expiration dates of the items
Provide an option to link Nourish with local grocery applications to record the bought groceries with their shelf life
Provide alerts of items close to the expiration dates so they can be donated and not thrown away
Ideation
Sketches
I started by sketching ideas to incorporate the new features and give the application a fresh look. Additionally, I conducted user testing on these sketches to refine and iterate toward the final design.
Home
Home scree provides the information of existing fridges on the profile and an option to add or find a fridge to donate or pick up food
Add a fridge
This option allows any business or individual to set up a community fridge and add it to the map by providing details such as the address, name, and a message indicating the availability of food in the fridge or if the fridge is open for food donations
Find a fridge
This option allows any business or individual to set up a community fridge and add it to the map by providing details such as the address, name, and a message indicating the availability of food in the fridge or if the fridge is open for food donations
Goal of the Project
Our goal for this project was to develop a mobile app that addresses the issue of hunger in Toronto while also creating opportunities for commercial benefits. We aimed to find a solution that not only helps those in need but also incentivizes businesses to participate in the process.
Design Process
Given that we had only two days to complete the project, which included both UX design and application development, I chose to streamline the process by breaking it down into three straightforward steps.
Research
Secondary Desk Research
To gain a deeper understanding of the issue, I began with secondary research on the following areas:
The current state of hunger.
How various organizations are addressing this problem.
The challenges faced by people in need of food.
The obstacles encountered by those who want to donate food.
WHO Report
According to The WHO's Hungry report 2020, By June, food bank visits in Toronto had increased by 22% compared to the year prior, and by August that number had grown by a staggering 51%.
Existing Organizations
I began by researching what existing food banks and other organizations are doing to tackle the problem of hunger. My focus was on understanding the challenges they face and the limitations that prevent them from effectively helping those in need. This research provided valuable insights into the current landscape and helped identify gaps where our app could make a meaningful impact.
Daily Bread Food Bank (Toronto)
Daily Bread is a nonprofit organization in Toronto addressing food insecurity by distributing food to those in need. Donations can be made by scheduling a pickup or dropping off food at designated locations. Food is distributed by appointment only
Limitation: The problem is that food distribution is available only by appointment, which is a significant drawback for people who need food immediately.
Community Fridge
Community Fridges Toronto was founded by photographer Jalil Bokhari and chef and restaurant owner Julian Bentivegna. The friends launched the initiative early in the pandemic with the support of small business owners and other community members. These fridges are set up by local communities to provide food for those in need.
Limitation: The problem is that awareness of the community fridges is limited to the local community, which restricts food donations from a broader audience.
The Problem
Existing food donation organizations operate by appointment only.
There's a lack of public awareness about these organizations and the services they offer.
Community fridges are limited in number and often overlooked due to insufficient visibility.
Additionally, communication between those who want to donate food, those in need, and the organizations is lacking.
The Challenge
How can businesses or individuals effectively assist those who want to donate or receive food by sharing information about their community fridges and connecting them with people in need, in order to help everyone easily locate nearby fridges for donation or pick-up?
Goal and Solution
Our goal is to connect individuals in need of food with those who wish to donate it, while also creating incentives for businesses to participate in this initiative.
Solution
As a solution, we decided to create a map-based application for community fridges. This app will help inform people about the locations of existing community fridges and connect those who want to donate food or set up a new community fridge with those in need of food.
